Nine University of North Georgia (UNG) students recently participated in a transformative five-week study abroad program in Peru, focusing on language immersion and cultural exploration. This initiative, in collaboration with Peru Study Abroad and La Universidad Andina del Cusco, aimed to enhance students’ linguistic proficiency and broaden their cultural horizons.
The students, including Lily Dickson, Willow Gray, Anna Mathis, Sebastian Madera, Angela Olguin, Renata Paul-Tafur, Erol Savas, Abbie Tanner, and Ceres Williams, engaged in a rigorous curriculum comprising Spanish language classes led by local instructors, a history and politics course on Peru, and an online hybrid class facilitated by Dr. Alvaro Torres-Calderon. Dr. Torres-Calderon, an expert in Modern Languages, structured the program to encompass diverse cultural experiences, such as visits to museums and archaeological sites, culminating in a memorable excursion to Machu Picchu.
Reflecting on their homestay experiences, students like Ceres Williams expressed gratitude for the genuine connections formed with Peruvian host families. Such interactions, ranging from casual banter to profound dialogues, offered invaluable insights into the local way of life and fostered a broader global perspective among the participants.
Sebastian Madera, a kinesiology student with aspirations of becoming a physical therapist, leveraged the opportunity to hone his Spanish skills while immersing himself in the rich Peruvian culture. His interactions with locals not only facilitated language practice but also instilled a sense of belonging and mutual respect between cultures.
Abbie Tanner, a marketing student with a passion for volunteering, found her study abroad experience in Peru instrumental in bridging language barriers and enhancing cross-cultural communication. Supported by grants and scholarships, Tanner’s journey underscored the transformative power of immersive learning in fostering a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.
Dr. Torres-Calderon emphasized the program’s profound impact on students, noting their enhanced language proficiency, expanded vocabulary, and enriched cultural awareness. The immersive nature of the experience, coupled with daily interactions and homestays, catalyzed significant personal growth and a more nuanced understanding of Peruvian heritage.
Williams echoed the sentiment, urging aspiring students to seize study abroad opportunities as a gateway to unparalleled personal and academic growth. She emphasized the invaluable lessons learned outside the confines of a traditional classroom, encouraging others to embrace the unknown for a truly enriching educational experience.
As the students immersed themselves in Peruvian culture, exploring historical sites and engaging with local communities, they not only honed their language skills but also deepened their appreciation for global diversity. The program’s holistic approach to education transcended conventional boundaries, offering a transformative learning experience that transcends academic confines.
UNG’s commitment to providing students with immersive study abroad opportunities underscores the university’s dedication to fostering global citizenship and cultural competence. Through initiatives like the Peru study abroad program, UNG continues to shape well-rounded individuals equipped to navigate an increasingly interconnected world with empathy and understanding.
