A University of Pittsburgh student, Sudiksha Konanki, has gone missing after a beach rescue incident near Punta Cana. The man who was last seen with her, Joshua Steven Riibe, shared details with prosecutors about their time together before her disappearance. According to reports, they were hit by a strong wave that swept them out to sea at the Riu República Hotel beach on March 6.
Riibe, a 22-year-old American, clarified that he was not involved in any wrongdoing and is not considered a suspect in the case. He recounted a challenging rescue attempt after the wave hit them, mentioning his efforts to save Konanki as they struggled in the water. Despite being a trained lifeguard, his experience was mainly in pool settings rather than the open sea.
After a harrowing ordeal in the water, Riibe said he last saw Konanki walking in knee-deep water before he fell asleep on a beach chair due to exhaustion. Upon waking up, he realized Konanki was missing and assumed she had returned to her room. However, her absence raised concerns among her companions, leading to a search effort and subsequent report to the authorities.
Konanki, who was on spring break with fellow students, was last seen on surveillance footage entering the beach with a group of friends. The sequence of events leading up to her disappearance involved an evening at the hotel bar before heading to the beach in the early hours of the morning. Following this, surveillance cameras captured most of the group leaving the beach, leaving Konanki with another individual.
Konanki’s father expressed deep concern for her well-being and urged authorities to explore all possible scenarios, including the potential involvement of foul play such as kidnapping or human trafficking. Law enforcement officials in Loudoun County, Virginia, where Konanki’s family resides, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions about the case.
