A Minnesota college student, Joshua Riibe, who was with University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki on the night she went missing during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic, expressed his desire to return home and resume his normal life. Riibe, an Iowa native, appeared in court for a habeas corpus hearing, asserting that he is prepared to go back to his routine as he has not been charged with any offense in connection to Konanki’s disappearance.
During the court proceedings, Riibe mentioned the emotional interaction he had with Konanki’s family, particularly her mother who thanked him for his actions. Despite not facing any charges, Riibe’s lawyers argued that his detention was unjustified, emphasizing that he is only a witness in the case. Prosecutors clarified in court that Riibe is not under arrest, although his passport has been confiscated, limiting his movements in the Dominican Republic.
Riibe’s plea to have his passport returned and to be allowed to move freely without surveillance was met with empathy as he expressed his longing to reunite with his family. His father also traveled to the Dominican Republic to offer support during this challenging time. Following the court session, the judge ruled in favor of Riibe, granting him relief from police monitoring, although his passport has yet to be returned.
The legal team representing Riibe issued a statement expressing gratitude for the recognition of his rights as a foreign citizen in the Dominican Republic. Despite the court’s decision to end surveillance, the return of Riibe’s passport is pending further deliberation, with a final decision expected on March 28 regarding potential charges or his departure from the country.
Authorities investigating the case believe that Konanki, aged 20, tragically died from drowning in Punta Cana on March 6. Recounting the events of that fateful night, Riibe disclosed that he and Konanki were swimming and sharing a moment in the ocean before being caught in a strong current. Riibe recounted his efforts to rescue Konanki, underscoring the harrowing experience of struggling to keep her afloat amid the turbulent waters.
Konanki’s family, acknowledging Riibe’s cooperation with the investigation and the absence of foul play, formally requested the Dominican police to declare their daughter deceased. The search-and-rescue operations were subsequently scaled back by the Dominican Republic Civil Defense, signaling a shift in focus towards concluding the investigation.
As Riibe awaits the final decision on his legal status and the return of his passport, the case of the missing Pittsburgh student continues to unfold, shedding light on the complexities and uncertainties surrounding this tragic incident.
