The College of Charleston has secured its position as a leading institution for study abroad programs. The university’s Center for International Education has garnered recognition as one of the top-ranked schools for participation in short-term and mid-length study abroad programs. This accolade was bestowed upon them in the Open Doors® 2025 Report on International Educational Exchange, a prestigious annual assessment of international educational exchange activities in the United States.
Speaking on this achievement, Melissa Ochal, the director of the CIE, emphasized the College of Charleston’s unwavering dedication to fostering global learning and student success. She credited the collaborative efforts of the faculty and staff who consistently motivate and assist students in embarking on transformative international experiences.
In the 2023–24 academic year, the College of Charleston excelled in study abroad participation, securing the following rankings: 2nd place for overall participation with 817 students, 1st place for short-term programs involving 543 students, and 5th place for mid-length programs comprising 286 students. These programs encompass various opportunities ranging from semester-long exchanges to specialized internship programs.
Ochal emphasized the profound impact of international experiences on students, highlighting how such engagements equip them with essential academic, professional, and personal skills necessary for success in a globalized world. The College’s top study destinations in 2023–24 included popular European countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, the United Kingdom, and France.
Mirka Martel, the head of research, evaluation, and learning at the Institute of International Education, underscored the significance of the Open Doors report as a comprehensive resource detailing the study abroad preferences of U.S. students. She noted that studying abroad plays a vital role in enriching the higher education experience by providing students with diverse cultural perspectives and immersive learning opportunities.

Supported by the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education, the Open Doors project offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of international education.
