Federation University is one of 16 Victorian universities selected to benefit from the Yes to International Students Fund, a $5 million grant aimed at supporting international education. This initiative, backed by the Victorian Government, is geared towards bolstering universities and TAFEs in expanding their global presence.
The announcement of this fund was made by the Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs, Danny Pearson, during a visit to William Angliss Institute. Pearson emphasized the importance of international students in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing Victoria’s global standing as a hub for education.
The focus of the investment lies in transnational education, which involves delivering Australian courses to international students abroad. This strategy enables universities and TAFEs to establish offshore campuses or collaborate with reputable international institutions to offer educational programs.
Gayle Tierney, the Minister for Skills and TAFE, underscored the significance of the Yes to International Students Fund in promoting Victorian education on a global scale. The partnerships forged through this initiative aim to develop new courses, expand existing programs, facilitate student exchanges, and enhance the state’s reputation in the international education arena.
The Victorian Government advocates for the removal of international student caps, asserting that such limitations hinder economic growth opportunities. Minister Tierney emphasized that eliminating these caps would not only benefit students by providing access to top-notch education but also foster innovation and cultural exchange.
The Yes to International Students Fund, a key component of the state government’s Economic Growth Statement, is part of a broader effort to support educational institutions in exploring global opportunities. In line with this commitment, the 2025/2026 Victorian Budget allocates $18.6 million to sustain and enhance international education programs and services.
By making Victoria’s high-quality education more accessible worldwide, the state stands to gain economically, strengthen its institutions’ global reputation, and offer staff and students avenues for research, career advancement, and future collaborations. The fund not only benefits students seeking world-class education in Victoria but also contributes to fostering innovation and deepening cultural ties on a global scale.
The collaboration between universities and TAFEs supported by the Yes to International Students Fund is expected to yield substantial benefits for Victoria, positioning the state as a leader in international education and paving the way for continued growth and success in the sector.
