Victoria has approved a $5 million investment in the ‘Say Yes to International Students Fund’ to enhance partnerships and attract international students to the state’s higher education institutions. The fund, announced during Premier Jacinta Allan’s visit to India, aims to strengthen educational ties with countries like India and Sri Lanka.
Despite the Federal Government’s student caps, which have been a point of contention, the Victorian State Government remains committed to supporting international students. The $5 million fund is intended to boost the economy, create jobs, and enhance Victoria’s global standing.
Among the 16 recipients of the fund is Victoria University, which plans to establish a branch campus in India, following the approval from India’s University Grants Commission. This initiative aligns with the state’s efforts to deepen educational collaborations and contribute to India’s National Education Policy.
RMIT University is set to continue its partnership with BITS Pilani through an immersion tour program, fostering educational exchange between Australia and India. Meanwhile, Melbourne University and Federation University are exploring partnership opportunities in India to enhance their academic offerings.
Additionally, Holmesglen TAFE is collaborating with Sri Lanka’s Australasian Academy to provide ICT qualifications, further expanding international education opportunities. The Victorian Government also aims to strengthen partnerships with Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, reflecting the state’s commitment to global education initiatives.
The economic impact of international education in Victoria cannot be understated, with a significant contribution of $15.9 billion to the state’s economy last year. The state welcomed over 330,000 international students from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the importance of international education for Victoria’s growth and diversity.
La Trobe University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Theo Farrell, commended the ‘Say Yes to International Students Fund’ as a testament to Victoria’s support for international students and their educational aspirations. The fund underscores the state’s commitment to providing quality education and fostering a welcoming environment for students from around the world.
