University of Sydney Students Embrace Japanese Language and Culture

University of Sydney students are delving into the intricacies of Japanese language and culture through the In-Country Experiences program. Since 2018, over 280 students have participated in this immersive learning opportunity at Tohoku University, where they engage in hands-on activities and cultural experiences to enhance their cross-cultural communication skills.

Alyssa Liang, a Bachelor of Commerce student, shared her insights on learning Japanese in Japan. She described the initial stages of mastering hiragana and katakana, highlighting the practicality of the phrases learned for real-life interactions. Each student was paired with a Japanese buddy who not only assisted with lessons but also offered valuable recommendations for exploring the local culture.

For Alyssa, the decision to learn Japanese stemmed from her fascination with Japan’s unique blend of modernity and nature. The language acquisition opened up avenues for her to navigate the country, interact with locals, and immerse herself in the rich cultural tapestry.

At Tohoku University, students participated in a myriad of cultural activities, including donning traditional attire like yukata, engaging in shodo (Japanese calligraphy), and experiencing tea ceremonies. Alyssa particularly cherished the experience of wearing yukata, finding it deeply immersive and transformative in her understanding and appreciation of Japanese traditions.

Beyond language proficiency and cultural insights, Alyssa emphasized the development of crucial life skills during her study abroad experience.
