UNSW Sydney has made headlines by finalizing a significant deal with OpenAI, marking the largest educational agreement in Australia with the renowned US-based research organization. This milestone agreement grants 10,000 UNSW staff access to the cutting-edge capabilities of the ChatGPT Edu platform. The purchase of 10,000 licenses by UNSW ensures that the ChatGPT Edu platform is now available to all fixed-term and permanent staff members. This strategic move allows academics to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into their research and teaching activities, safeguarding their intellectual property while leveraging the benefits of AI technology. Professor Attila Brungs, UNSW’s Vice-Chancellor and President, unveiled this groundbreaking agreement at the UNSW Societal Impact of AI Symposium in Sydney, emphasizing the university’s commitment to responsible AI adoption.
Chrissy Burns, UNSW’s Chief Information Officer, highlighted the university’s leadership in promoting the ethical use of AI technologies. The enterprise-level ChatGPT Edu tool offers enhanced security and tailored features compared to standard versions, ensuring privacy and data protection for users. The rollout of licenses will be accompanied by training and guidelines to support staff in utilizing AI responsibly and aligning with UNSW’s values.
Raghav Gupta, OpenAI’s Head of Education in APAC, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in education and research, noting its integration as a foundational element in higher education infrastructure. UNSW staff members will have the opportunity to undergo optional training before accessing the ChatGPT Edu platform, facilitating a thoughtful and gradual implementation process over the upcoming months.
The UNSW ChatGPT Edu Pilot, conducted over 10 months with 800 staff and select students, showcased the positive impact of AI on research and teaching. Key outcomes included strong staff engagement, enhanced student interactions, innovative teaching methods, and increased comfort levels with generative AI among students. Christian Wood, UNSW’s Director of Innovation Enablement, expressed enthusiasm for expanding access to ChatGPT Edu, underscoring the importance of equitable AI tool access to enhance the university’s academic environment.
In response to environmental concerns related to AI technologies, UNSW has committed to purchasing carbon offsets to mitigate emissions associated with the ChatGPT Edu agreement. By incorporating sustainability measures into the rollout process, the university demonstrates its dedication to environmental responsibility and aligning with emission reduction targets.
