University of Connecticut (UConn) has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, receiving accolades from the State of Connecticut for its on-campus projects aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2030 and net carbon zero by 2040. The awards, presented at the Connecticut GreenerGov ceremony, commend UConn’s efforts in environmental stewardship.
Among the initiatives acknowledged were the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations, a reduction in volatile anesthesia gases at UConn Health, and the promotion of eco-friendly practices among residential students through the EcoMadness competition. These endeavors reflect UConn’s dedication to advancing sustainability on its campuses.
Notable achievements that earned UConn recognition include the implementation of an on-demand hot water project at UConn Health, expected to yield substantial natural gas savings annually, and a 3% reduction in energy consumption from fiscal year 2023 to 2024. President Radenka Maric and other UConn representatives accepted the awards at the State Capitol ceremony.
The GreenerGov awards, established in line with Gov. Ned Lamont’s directives, underscore the state agencies’ commitment to reducing energy usage, water consumption, waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions. UConn’s contributions to these sustainability goals were highlighted during the evaluation period from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.
UConn’s achievements were recognized in various categories, including the Sustainability Achievement Award for its extensive installation and operation of electric vehicle charging stations, positioning the university as a leader in clean energy adoption. UConn Health received the Trailblazer Award for its significant efforts in curbing the use of harmful volatile anesthesia gases.
Furthermore, seven UConn employees were honored as Eco Champions for their instrumental roles in promoting energy and resource conservation through initiatives like the EcoMadness competition. This annual event engages students in reducing energy and water consumption, as well as enhancing recycling efforts across campus residence halls.
The EcoMadness competition, held each October, encourages students to decrease their resource usage compared to a baseline established in September. Through education and engagement, participants strive to lower energy and water consumption while maximizing recycling, with winning halls earning rewards such as free Dairy Bar ice cream.
Last year’s champions included Grange/Hicks residence hall for energy reduction, Allen/Kingston residence hall for water conservation, and McConaughy Hall for recycling compliance. These successes underscore UConn’s multifaceted approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility within its campus community.
By fostering a culture of sustainability and recognizing the collective efforts of its staff and students, UConn continues to lead by example in promoting eco-friendly practices and contributing to a greener future for all.
