In South Korea, the adoption of AI textbooks in elementary schools has reached approximately 30% following their introduction in the 2025 academic year. These digital textbooks, supported by artificial intelligence, are currently being utilized in subjects such as English, mathematics, and computer informatics. The Ministry of Education reported that out of 6,339 elementary schools in the country, 29.1% have embraced AI textbooks for third-grade English, while 28.6% have integrated them for third-grade mathematics.
For fourth-grade English and mathematics, the adoption rates stood at 29.6% and 29.2% respectively. This initiative marks the initial phase of a broader plan to gradually introduce AI textbooks across various compulsory subjects by 2028, excluding certain disciplines like art, music, physical education, and ethics.
While elementary schools have shown significant uptake, the utilization of AI textbooks in middle and high schools is comparatively lower. Statistics reveal that 26.9% of middle schools have incorporated AI textbooks for first-year English, and 26.1% for mathematics. Similarly, in high schools, 24.4% have adopted AI textbooks for first-year English, and 23.8% for mathematics.
Despite the push for AI-based educational tools, concerns have been raised regarding the readiness of teachers and infrastructure to support this technological shift. A survey conducted by the Korean Teachers & Educational Worker’s Union indicated that a vast majority of teachers felt inadequately prepared for the integration of AI textbooks, citing insufficient training provided by the Ministry of Education.
Regional disparities in AI textbook adoption have also emerged, with notable variations across different provinces. While Daegu boasts a high adoption rate of 98%, areas like Sejong, South Jeolla, and Gwangju lag behind with adoption rates ranging from 8% to 12%. These discrepancies have led to speculation about the potential political underpinnings influencing the adoption of AI textbooks, particularly in regions aligned with conservative or liberal factions.
For instance, Daegu, a conservative stronghold, exhibits a strong preference for AI textbooks, correlating with its political inclinations. In contrast, provinces like Gwangju and South Jeolla, known for liberal leanings, show lower adoption rates. However, the data reveals nuances, as regions like North Gyeongsang display varying adoption rates, challenging the notion of a clear ideological divide in AI textbook adoption.
As South Korea navigates the integration of AI textbooks into its education system, the debate continues on the efficacy of these digital tools, the importance of adequate teacher training, and the impact of regional dynamics on adoption rates. The evolving landscape of digital education underscores the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the diverse needs and challenges encountered in the implementation of AI technologies in the classroom.
