Network of Nations, a non-profit organization supporting international students at Northern Illinois University (NIU), marks its 25th anniversary this year. Founded as a small international student ministry, the organization has evolved into a network involving over 20 local churches and a dedicated team of volunteers. Executive director Lisa Dietrich emphasizes that Network of Nations aims to provide hospitality, encouragement, and a sense of belonging to the diverse student population at NIU.
Offering a wide range of services, including airport pickups, English as a second language classes, religious groups, and material assistance, Network of Nations supports approximately 300 students annually from more than 120 countries. Despite not being officially affiliated with the university, the organization plays a vital role in enhancing the overall student experience and fostering a sense of community among international students.
Over the years, the organization has expanded its services and activities, with one of its most cherished events being the Intercultural Café. This weekly dinner gathering features a variety of dishes from around the world, prepared by students eager to share their cultural heritage. For many attendees like Brandon Ty, a student from Cambodia, the café serves as a place to forge friendships, alleviate homesickness, and create a sense of family away from home.
For Johnson Wor, a student from Ghana, Network of Nations has been a lifeline since his arrival in the United States. Wor, who now volunteers to pick up new international students from the airport, emphasizes the cyclical nature of support within the organization. He acknowledges the importance of providing assistance to newcomers, knowing firsthand the challenges of adjusting to a foreign environment.
However, recent political developments, such as visa uncertainties and immigration policies targeting international students, have added a layer of fear and uncertainty for many within the international student community. Wor and other members express concerns about the impact of such policies on their ability to pursue their education and feel secure in the United States.
Despite these challenges, stories like that of Haniel George Mngodo from Tanzania highlight the profound impact of Network of Nations. Mngodo, who faced financial difficulties during the pandemic and was on the brink of discontinuing his education, found crucial support from the organization. Through the assistance of volunteers and church sponsors, Mngodo was able to continue his studies and eventually graduate, underscoring the pivotal role that Network of Nations plays in students’ lives.
Looking ahead, Dietrich and her team remain committed to expanding the organization’s reach and impact in the coming years. By providing a supportive environment, fostering cultural exchange, and offering practical assistance, Network of Nations strives to create a welcoming and inclusive community for international students at NIU, ensuring that they feel at home while pursuing their academic goals.
