The LGBTQ+ Center at West Virginia University is hosting a student research series that delves into the experiences of LGBTQ+ students on campus. This initiative aims to shed light on various aspects of LGBTQ+ student life and challenges they may face.
Aja Gregg, a graduate student from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, is set to kick off the series with a presentation titled “Behind the Stereotype: Exploring the Diverse Experiences of LGBTQ+ Students on HBCU Campuses.” The presentation is scheduled for tomorrow, April 4, from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be conducted virtually on Zoom. This research promises to offer valuable insights into the nuanced experiences of LGBTQ+ students within the historically black college and university (HBCU) setting.
Following this, on April 25, Gabbi Johnson, a graduate student in the School of Counseling and Well-being, will present her research titled “Sexual Orientation and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Among College Students: Examining Multisexual Identities and the Moderating Role of Trauma.” This presentation will also take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Zoom. Johnson’s research focuses on understanding the correlation between sexual orientation, non-suicidal self-injury, and the impact of trauma, particularly within the college student population.
The series offers a platform for students to showcase their research findings and engage the community in discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ issues on college campuses. By highlighting these studies, the LGBTQ+ Center hopes to foster greater awareness, inclusivity, and support for LGBTQ+ students within the academic environment.
This research series not only provides a glimpse into the unique challenges and experiences of LGBTQ+ students but also underscores the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive campus environment for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. By encouraging dialogue and understanding through research, the LGBTQ+ Center at West Virginia University is taking significant strides towards promoting diversity and equality within the academic community.
