Three funded positions are now available for candidates interested in pursuing a Joint PhD program between the University of Sydney and the University of Glasgow. These opportunities offer successful candidates the chance to collaborate with esteemed researchers, split their time between both campuses, and obtain a joint degree. The available positions are in the fields of Politics, Education, and Economics.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney and the College of Social Sciences at the University of Glasgow have introduced three new joint PhD projects set to commence in October 2025. These projects aim to attract aspiring PhD candidates globally, enabling them to work under the guidance of top research supervisors. The selected candidates will be enrolled simultaneously at both institutions, spend time at each campus, and ultimately earn a joint degree.
The first project, titled “Democratic Integrity? A Normative and Empirical Assessment of Australian Anti-Corruption Agencies,” delves into the role of independent anti-corruption bodies within democracies, focusing on their efforts to combat corruption and uphold governmental integrity. This study aims to fill existing research gaps regarding the definition of “integrity” within democratic structures and the effectiveness of anti-corruption agencies in mature democracies, such as Australia.
Another project, “Beyond the textbook: Responsive Literacies Education in Postcolonial Contexts through Material and Relational Entanglements,” addresses the challenges faced by educators in the majority world, particularly in regions like Ghana, in preparing students for a rapidly evolving global landscape. By exploring literacy teaching practices in Ghanaian primary schools, this research seeks to enhance teacher professional development and align literacy strategies with policy objectives.
The final project, “Role of Estate Agents in Rising House Prices in the UK and Australia,” focuses on analyzing housing market dynamics and investigating the influence of major estate agencies on price fluctuations. By examining real estate market data from England, Wales, and Australia, this study aims to shed light on how estate agencies’ strategies impact overall price trends and inform monetary policy decisions.
Interested candidates with relevant research interests are encouraged to apply for these Joint PhD opportunities. The application deadline is set for 31st March 2025, offering a valuable chance for scholars to engage in impactful research collaborations across international institutions.
