Equity has launched the ‘Break Down Barriers’ campaign to advocate for the abolition of audition fees for drama schools and performing arts courses. The initiative aims to address the financial challenges faced by aspiring artists, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds and marginalized communities, in accessing the performing arts industry.
A survey conducted among Equity’s student members revealed that a significant portion faced difficulties in covering audition fees and other course-related costs, leading to barriers in pursuing training opportunities. The survey highlighted that removing audition fees would be instrumental in fostering inclusivity within the performing arts sector.
Notably, over half of the respondents had to pay audition fees ranging from £40 to £80, with minimal reimbursement for associated expenses like travel and accommodation. The campaign spearheaded by Equity’s Student Deputies Committee calls for the elimination of audition fees, transparency in course costs, and financial support for audition-related expenditures.
The campaign’s significance is underscored by the testimonies of Equity’s Student Deputies Committee members, who emphasize the financial strain faced by working-class creatives in pursuing careers in the arts. The initiative seeks to dismantle financial barriers that deter individuals from diverse backgrounds from entering the performing arts domain.
Louise McMullan, Equity’s Deputy General Secretary, commended the schools that have already abolished audition fees as a step towards democratizing access to arts education. The campaign advocates for broader participation by urging institutions to follow suit in promoting accessibility and diversity within the industry.
Additional survey findings shed light on the financial hardships experienced by students, with many relying on part-time work or accruing debt to support their education. The survey also revealed challenges in accessing resources and the burden of personal expenses incurred during training.
The campaign’s call to action resonates against the backdrop of industry data indicating a lack of socioeconomic diversity among cultural and creative professionals. Reports have shown a disproportionate representation of individuals from privileged backgrounds in prestigious awards and key industry roles, reflecting systemic inequities in the sector.
Equity’s ‘Break Down Barriers’ campaign aligns with broader efforts to promote inclusivity and equity in the performing arts landscape. By advocating for the removal of financial barriers and fostering a more accessible training environment, the initiative aims to create a level playing field for aspiring artists, irrespective of their socioeconomic background.
