International students in Australia have fallen victim to a series of scams orchestrated by fraudsters posing as Chinese authorities, resulting in a staggering loss of over $5 million in just five months. These scammers, purporting to be Mandarin-speaking law enforcement officers, employ tactics that include threats of severe consequences and demands for money or personal information.
The deceptive schemes involve falsely accusing students of criminal activities, such as possessing counterfeit documents, and manipulating them into believing that their identities are linked to financial crimes. Some victims are even led to believe that Australian authorities are preparing to arrest and deport them for violating visa regulations. These scams have been a cause for concern among law enforcement agencies for some time.
The National Anti-Scam Centre, overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has noted a concerning escalation in the aggressiveness of these scams. Reports indicate an increasing number of cases referencing 24-hour surveillance, with a notable spike in incidents in recent months. The centre has issued a stern warning against succumbing to the pressure exerted by these fraudulent callers.
During the first five months of 2025, close to 680 cases of Chinese authority scams were reported to the anti-scam centre, resulting in a total loss of $5.1 million. The success rate of these scams stood at 5.5%, with victims facing an average financial loss of $138,018. The majority of those targeted were young individuals between the ages of 18 and 24, with 21 students falling prey to these deceitful tactics.
Authorities have previously highlighted the vulnerability of Chinese students to scams, citing instances of ‘virtual kidnapping’ where students were coerced into faking their own abductions. These elaborate ruses involved victims sending staged photos and videos to their families, under the false pretense of being held captive by criminals.
Law enforcement agencies have emphasized the importance of vigilance and urged individuals to refrain from sharing personal information or transferring money to suspicious entities. The scammers typically initiate contact by phone, often in Mandarin, and fabricate urgent scenarios that demand immediate financial transactions to avoid repercussions.
With state police closely monitoring these fraudulent activities, concerns have been raised about a global extortion network targeting Mandarin-speaking communities, particularly students. The scammers resort to intimidation and blackmail tactics to extort money from unsuspecting individuals.
The National Anti-Scam Centre has advised the public to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with callers who exhibit coercive behavior. By raising awareness about these scams and encouraging individuals to verify the authenticity of any requests for money or personal details, authorities aim to combat the rising threat posed by fraudulent schemes targeting international students in Australia.
