Students, faculty, and staff gathered at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) gymnasium for the 2025 Annual Research Symposium (BARS) where 65 student research projects were on display. Mentored by 27 faculty members, the projects covered a diverse range of topics, with students delving into subjects like job training for individuals with autism, digital fashion’s impact on mood, and the potential benefits of Moringa Oleifera extract on sea urchin egg viability.
During the event, students Andrea Aponte, Srijon Sarker, and Joseph Collado presented their research orally, showcasing the depth of exploration and dedication they had put into their projects over the past year. Associate Provost Liesl Jones emphasized the beauty and creativity of STEM disciplines, encouraging students to see themselves as the next generation of researchers who will drive innovation and find solutions across various fields.
The day also featured a panel discussion on “Broadening Participation in Research: Equity, Access, and Impact at BMCC,” where experts like Science Professor Saavik Ford and ASAP Career Specialist Beth Cooperman shared insights on fostering inclusivity and diversity in research. The event highlighted BMCC’s commitment to supporting female students and faculty through initiatives like the Women in STEM program, aimed at providing resources and opportunities for women in science and technology fields.
Keynote speaker Dr. Christine P. Hendon, an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, shared her research journey and work on optical coherence tomography systems for cardiac electrophysiology. Dr. Hendon’s presentation inspired students to persevere in their research pursuits, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and innovative ideas in addressing societal challenges.
Dr. Odaelys Pollard, BMCC’s Director of Research Programs, praised the students’ exemplary scholarship and passion displayed at the event. The winners of BARS 2025 were announced, with Chris Acosta, Michael Kahn, and a team comprising Stalin Rozario, Suhjin Bae, and Dyasia Flagg recognized for their outstanding research projects in social science and science categories.
