Each spring, Bates College announces its Green Innovation Grants, offering funding for sustainability projects proposed by students, faculty, and staff to address campus challenges. Assistant Director of Sustainability, Tom Twist, emphasizes the importance of empowering the campus community to take ownership of sustainability initiatives.
This year, the Green Innovation Grants will support various projects, including a paint-waste mitigation system for Schaeffer Theatre, additional tools for the Bates Green Bike program, compost bins, a reuse hub, and a fence for the Bates Garden. These initiatives aim to enhance sustainability efforts across different areas of campus.
Notably, past projects funded through the Green Innovation program have become integral to Bates College’s sustainability practices. The student-run Bates Garden and the use of stainless steel cups in Dining Services are examples of initiatives that originated from these grants, showcasing the program’s long-term impact.
Within the Department of Theater and Dance, faculty and staff are working on improving sustainability practices related to the use of latex paint for creating sets. By implementing new tools and systems, such as Repaint Studio paint trays with silicone liners, the theater department aims to reduce waste and promote responsible paint management.
Latex paint, a commonly used material in theater productions, presents environmental challenges due to its disposal. The theater team’s efforts to minimize waste and enhance paint management not only benefit their department but also set an example for other campus areas that use paint, fostering a culture of sustainability at Bates College.
Associate Professor of Theater Christine McDowell emphasizes the importance of considering the environmental impact of materials used in productions. By adopting sustainable practices and educating students on responsible paint usage, the theater department aims to instill a mindset of mindful resource consumption and waste reduction.
Through the Green Innovation Grants, Bates College continues to support innovative sustainability projects that contribute to a greener campus. The collaborative efforts of students, faculty, and staff demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship and a proactive approach to addressing sustainability challenges.
