Sandy Sanderson has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Brenda Clouten Memorial Art Scholarship by the Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG). The scholarship, established in 2005 in memory of Brenda Clouten, aims to support and develop emerging artistic talent in the Hunter region. Over its 20-year history, the program has been instrumental in fostering the growth of young artists, providing not only financial assistance but also invaluable professional opportunities.
Out of a competitive pool of candidates, Sandy Sanderson emerged as the scholarship recipient, with Liss Finney named as the runner-up. The gallery’s Director, Gerry Bobsien, emphasized the significance of the scholarship in shaping the careers of budding artists, noting its role as a platform for showcasing fresh talent and innovative themes in contemporary art.
Sandy Sanderson’s winning piece, titled Communia Omnia, is a multi-faceted installation that intricately weaves together elements of art, science, technology, philosophy, and ritual. The artwork, a fusion of natural objects, video projections, light, and synthetic materials, explores the interplay between various mediums and concepts, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
The Brenda Clouten Memorial Art Scholarship Exhibition, currently on display at MRAG, features not only the works of the scholarship recipients but also those of the other finalists. Among them, Indeah Clark’s Prettier When You Smile caught the attention of the Friends of MRAG committee, who acquired the piece for the gallery’s collection. Indeah Clark, of Biripi, Worimi, and Wonnarua descent, infuses her art with social and political themes, drawing inspiration from pop culture.
Visitors to the exhibition can immerse themselves in the diverse artistic interpretations of the 11 finalists, each offering a unique perspective and creative exploration. The showcase includes works by Aidan Gageler, Alessia Sakoff, Claire Paul, Brigitte Beyer, Genevieve Graham, Indeah Clark, James Rhodes, Lexie Worboys, Nikola Jokanovic, Liss Finney, and the scholarship winner, Sandy Sanderson.
The Brenda Clouten Memorial Art Scholarship Exhibition will be open to the public until June 15, 2025, providing art enthusiasts and aficionados with an opportunity to witness the next generation of talent in the Hunter region.
