UC Santa Cruz students residing in family student housing are voicing their concerns over the university’s plan to implement a significant rent hike of $600 per month for the upcoming new housing facility. The proposed increase, totaling $7,200 annually, has sparked outrage among families already struggling to manage their finances on academic incomes.
The university is in the process of constructing a new Family Student Housing complex, which will feature 120 apartment units and a child care center. This development is part of a larger housing project known as Student Housing West. The new complex is designated for UCSC students living with family members, including children, partners, parents, or siblings. Once completed, the existing family housing facility on Heller Drive will be demolished to make way for over 2,900 units of undergraduate housing.
Residents were informed that families will be gradually relocated to the new facility between fall of the current year and January 2026. However, the new housing complex will come with a significant increase in rent, with a two-bedroom unit costing $2,500 per month compared to the current rate of less than $1,900.
The rent hike has sparked a wave of dissatisfaction among residents, such as Nate Edenhofer, a doctoral student, and his wife Sierra, a lecturer at UCSC, who are struggling to make ends meet with the current housing costs. The couple, who are already allocating a substantial portion of their income towards housing, expressed concerns about the financial strain the rent increase will impose on their family.
University officials have defended the planned increase, citing the need to cover rising operational costs associated with the new building, staff salaries, and utilities. Despite residents’ pleas to reconsider the hike, the university has maintained its stance, emphasizing the necessity of the raise to offset expenses.
Residents, including members of the Family Student Housing Tenants Association, have been actively engaging with housing officials to address the rent increase. Stephanie Hertel, a doctoral student and association member, expressed her unease over the financial burden the hike will place on her neighbors and colleagues, advocating for a reversal of the decision.
Amidst the ongoing debate, concerns have been raised about the potential impact of the rent hike on student families’ decisions to expand their families while pursuing their education. Nate Edenhofer highlighted the reduction in affordable housing units for families on campus and the potential deterrent effect on students contemplating starting families during their academic tenure.
As discussions continue between residents and university officials, the fate of UCSC’s Family Student Housing remains uncertain, with families grappling with the impending rent increase and the prospect of relocating to the new housing complex.
