The Australian Research Council (ARC) has recently made significant updates to its due diligence process in response to new legislative requirements. These updates, mandated by amendments to the Australian Research Council Act 2001, aim to address matters related to national security, defense, and international relations.
To ensure compliance with these legislative changes, the ARC has collaborated closely with government bodies and educational institutions to enhance its research security framework. Key modifications include earlier and more robust research security screenings, increased engagement with Administering Organisations, updated guidelines on disclosing foreign affiliations, and improved alignment between research security protocols and grant compliance mechanisms.
These reforms are in line with recommendations from the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security and the University Foreign Interference Taskforce. The ARC acknowledges the collective responsibility in maintaining research security and commends universities for their efforts in identifying and managing associated risks.
As a result of these enhanced processes, the announcement of grants for LP24R2 and FL25 has been rescheduled to be released by the end of June 2025. Additionally, the application deadline for LP25R2 has been extended from 25 June 2025 to COB 23 July 2025, as indicated in the updated National Competitive Grants Program scheme calendar.
The ARC expresses gratitude to its university and research sector partners for their understanding and continued collaboration during the implementation of these critical changes.
These updates signify a proactive approach by the ARC to adapt to evolving regulatory landscapes and safeguard national interests in research activities. By prioritizing research security and compliance, the ARC aims to foster a robust and trustworthy research environment conducive to innovation and knowledge advancement.
Looking ahead, these developments underscore the importance of ongoing vigilance and cooperation between research institutions, government entities, and funding bodies to uphold the integrity and security of Australia’s research landscape.
