Stories of Nepalis living and working abroad often reveal tales of resilience and determination. In the case of one Dubai-returnee, the journey from retail to launching a successful tea business in Nepal is a testament to the immigrant experience.
His father’s migration to Iraq and later to the UAE for work set the stage for a better life for the family. Inspired by his father’s footsteps, the young man ventured to Dubai on a family visa, driven by a desire to stand on his own feet without burdening his father’s hard-earned money.
Starting as a salesman in a retail store, he quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his sales acumen and determination. The relentless pursuit of excellence led him to become a store manager, mastering various skills and earning accolades for his performance.
Life in Dubai was not without its challenges, as he navigated cramped living conditions and financial constraints. However, the lessons learned and the experiences gained during his 3.5 years in Dubai laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
Despite the allure of career progression in Dubai, the call of entrepreneurship beckoned him back to Nepal. Armed with courage and a vision, he embarked on a new journey, leveraging his retail background to explore opportunities in the local market.
During a trip to India, a serendipitous encounter with a young tea seller sparked the idea of establishing a tea business in Nepal. Drawing inspiration from tea cafes in India and the USA, he, along with a partner, ventured into the tea business, with a focus on creating a unique and inviting space for customers.
With the support of family investors from Kuwait and the UAE, they launched Chiya Spot, offering a special blend of tea that soon gained popularity, attracting a loyal customer base and social media attention.
As the business flourished, they expanded to a new branch in Boudha, drawing inspiration from the cultural aesthetics of Dubai. However, the sudden influx of customers, driven by social media exposure, posed new challenges that required swift adaptation and expansion.
Despite the unexpected hurdles, the entrepreneur remains focused on creating a welcoming space for patrons to enjoy tea and conversations, balancing ambiance with affordability. The success of the tea business not only fulfills a niche in the market but also symbolizes the immigrant’s journey of resilience and contribution.
From the bustling streets of Dubai to the vibrant cafes of Nepal, the transformation from a salesman to a tea entrepreneur embodies the spirit of the Nepali diaspora, forging new paths and making meaningful contributions both abroad and at home.
