The school district is embarking on a journey to integrate AI resources and test new courses for students in the ongoing academic year. The school system initiated pilot programs at Rudolph Gordon School and Fountain Inn High School earlier this year to evaluate MagicSchool AI as a novel student-learning tool. MagicSchool AI, a generative AI platform developed by educators, allows teachers and students to create content based on prompts or datasets. Teachers across GCS have undergone training on utilizing MagicSchool AI.

During the pilot phase, MagicSchool AI was primarily utilized in English and language-arts classes to facilitate writing analysis and debate-prompt exercises. Teachers monitored and regulated students’ access to MagicSchool AI tools, ensuring a controlled learning environment. Unlike other generative AI platforms, students’ interactions with MagicSchool AI were guided and supervised by teachers to maximize educational benefits.

Upon the success of the pilot program, middle and high school educators can now integrate MagicSchool AI into their classrooms. Students are required to undergo digital citizenship training and complete the necessary MagicSchool training to leverage this innovative learning resource. Stevens highlighted the dissemination of information about MagicSchool AI and its integration into the school system to parents and guardians. Additionally, a new course titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” is being rolled out at Riverside and Woodmont high schools. These schools were selected by the South Carolina Department of Education to pilot the course for ninth- and 10th-grade students.

As per the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, AI proficiency is identified as a crucial skill expected to see a rise in demand by 2030. Stevens emphasized that graduates equipped with digital literacy and AI proficiency will have a competitive edge in the evolving job market landscape.

The “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” course commenced at Riverside High School this fall and will be available at Woodmont High School in the upcoming spring semester of 2026. Stevens hinted at the potential expansion of AI courses to other high schools based on the outcomes of the pilot program and student interest.
