As a winter storm swept over the state, causing inclement weather, schools and local governments in the area have made operational adjustments for Thursday, Feb. 20. The National Weather Service Wilmington issued an advisory warning of possible ice accumulation, urging caution on the roads, especially on bridges that are prone to icing. The Wilmington Police Department emphasized the need for reduced speeds and increased vigilance while driving in these conditions.
Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency, advising people to stay off the roads due to the hazardous weather. Measures to prevent freezing pipes and protect pets and plants from the cold were recommended. With freezing temperatures persisting, New Hanover and Brunswick county schools decided to switch to remote learning on Thursday.
Several area governments and institutions also announced delays and changes to their schedules. Bald Head Island’s village offices closed, while Belville’s town hall and riverwalk opened late. Brunswick County Community College and Schools adjusted their operations, with remote learning implemented on Thursday. Cape Fear Academy and Cape Fear Community College announced delays and remote learning plans as well.
Leland’s town facilities closed early on Wednesday and were set to reopen at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Pender County Government and Schools also adopted a delayed opening and remote learning schedule. UNCW delayed classes and events due to the weather conditions, and the USS North Carolina planned to open at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
These decisions were made in response to the winter storm and the potential dangers posed by icy conditions. The safety of students, staff, and residents was a top priority for the authorities involved. As the community braced for the impact of the weather, adjustments were made to ensure minimal disruptions and prioritize safety.
While the region dealt with the challenges brought by the winter storm, residents were encouraged to stay informed and follow updates from local authorities. The coordination between schools, governments, and organizations reflected a proactive approach to managing the weather-related risks and ensuring the well-being of the community.
