University Student Targeted in Columbia University’s Secret Disciplinary Process

Columbia University has found itself embroiled in a controversy surrounding its treatment of university students who are critical of Israel. The institution has been accused of using a secretive disciplinary process to target and punish students advocating for Palestine on campus.

In the aftermath of student demonstrations protesting U.S. support for Israel during the Gaza conflict, Columbia University has initiated covert investigations into students involved in pro-Palestinian activities. These actions include public protests, sharing materials condemning Israel’s actions, and advocating for the cessation of U.S. arms sales to Israel.

The university’s approach to quelling campus activism draws on provisions from the Civil Rights Act, which Columbia interprets broadly to label criticism of Israel as “discriminatory harassment.” Operating under the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), specifically established to address discrimination issues, Columbia’s secretive investigations can lead to severe penalties such as disciplinary notifications, suspensions, loss of housing, expulsions, and even revocation of diplomas.
