In a recent court decision, a former Baylor University student, James K. Shadle, charged with sexually assaulting a fellow student, had his plea bargain rejected by Judge Thomas West of Waco’s 19th State District Court. The plea agreement, which involved reduced charges and deferred probation, was turned down, leading to the setting of a trial date for April 14.
Shadle, a vocal performance and music education major at Baylor before the incident, faced accusations from a female student alleging assault during an encounter in December 2021. The student reported that Shadle forcibly engaged in sexual activities despite her protests, leading to his arrest and subsequent expulsion from the university.
The rejected plea bargain would have lessened the severity of the charges and reduced the duration of Shadle’s requirement to register as a sex offender.
