New Zealand has taken a significant step towards enhancing educational ties with Vietnam by announcing a surge in opportunities for Vietnamese university students. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, during his recent visit to Vietnam, emphasized the valuable contribution of Vietnamese students to New Zealand’s economy, amounting to over $88 million.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of Vietnamese students, Luxon unveiled plans to increase study opportunities in New Zealand. The two nations, commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations, solidified their commitment through a comprehensive strategic partnership focusing on education and defense.
Currently, around 1,700 Vietnamese students are pursuing higher education in New Zealand. In a bid to further support Vietnamese students, New Zealand has ramped up scholarship programs, awards, and transnational education initiatives. Notably, there has been a 56% rise in the number of awards available to Vietnamese students, enabling them to enroll in any of New Zealand’s eight public universities or three public institutes of technology.
Furthermore, the introduction of a record number of 45 New Zealand Schools Scholarships for Vietnamese students in grades 8-10 emphasizes the commitment to attracting exceptional high school students. Additionally, 14 New Zealand University Awards have been earmarked for undergraduate students for the first time.
These initiatives not only benefit Vietnamese students but also enrich New Zealand’s educational landscape by fostering a diverse international community. Institutions like the University of Auckland are particularly optimistic about the influx of motivated Vietnamese students seeking educational and career growth opportunities.
With New Zealand and Vietnam aligning their educational priorities in fields such as STEM, economics, and artificial intelligence, collaborative efforts are underway. The signing of memorandums of understanding between universities from both countries signifies a deeper commitment to educational exchange.
As Vietnam emerges as a promising market for international students, New Zealand aims to solidify its position as a preferred study destination. However, to sustain and expand this growth, efforts to address barriers faced by Vietnamese students, such as language requirements and visa processing challenges, are imperative.
