La Trobe University is set to introduce a new 220-bed student accommodation complex in Bendigo, enhancing the city’s status as a thriving University City. This initiative, unveiled on 28 February, aims to address the increasing demand for higher education in Central Victoria by providing modern living spaces for students by the end of 2028.
The approximately $50 million project on Williamson Street signifies La Trobe’s commitment to offering quality education and supporting its growing student population. La Trobe’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Theo Farrell, emphasized the university’s focus on driving regional growth through education and research. The accommodation design will cater to students’ needs, featuring study zones, communal areas, and wellness facilities to promote a balanced university lifestyle.
This development is part of La Trobe’s broader investment in Bendigo, totaling over $150 million since 2019. Previous investments include a state-of-the-art engineering and technology center, upgrades to student facilities, and ongoing redevelopment projects in healthcare disciplines. Marg O’Rourke, Bendigo’s Head of Campus, highlighted how these investments not only enhance the student experience but also contribute to the city’s economic and academic landscape.
