Greenpeace launched its Innovation Hub at the end of 2024, aiming to foster a positive culture for creativity and innovation. This cross-functional unit is a collaborative effort between Greenpeace International and three regional organizations. The journey to establish this hub began with a shared vision of driving impactful innovation within Greenpeace.
To bring fresh perspectives and external support, Greenpeace engaged in a university consulting program with Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Four students from diverse backgrounds joined forces to work on a project that truly mattered. Over eight weeks, they delved into the world of environmental innovation, offering strategic insights and collaborating closely with the Innovation Hub team.
The students’ initial attraction to the Innovation Hub’s mission stemmed from its alignment with technology innovation and environmental conservation. As technology evolves rapidly, Greenpeace laid the groundwork to remain impactful through its Technology Vision. This vision aims to digitally transform the organization and drive innovation that reaches more people to fight for a sustainable future.
Defining success for Greenpeace’s projects posed a challenge, given the organization’s unique metrics for impact assessment. The students embarked on a structured approach, conducting thorough research and interviews to understand the Innovation Hub’s operations and contributions. They focused on learning from both successes and failures to drive continuous improvement.
One of the significant challenges encountered was aligning internal expectations within Greenpeace’s global network of passionate individuals. Balancing innovation with established frameworks and limited time constraints required careful navigation. Despite these challenges, the students managed to influence change within the organization by enhancing project evaluation processes and addressing human capital challenges.
After weeks of dedicated work, the students presented their findings to university stakeholders and the Innovation Hub project leaders.
