Evacuate Immediately!! Tsunami Warning in Japan

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck near Taiwan on Wednesday, April 3rd. The tremor prompted a tsunami warning for Japan’s southern islands, with waves as high as three meters (10 feet) expected to hit imminently.

Initial reports from Taiwan’s central weather administration placed the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.2 and centered it near the capital, Taipei. Power outages were reported in parts of the city.

Across the sea in Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency reacted swiftly, issuing tsunami warnings for its southern island chains. National broadcaster NHK blared warnings urging residents to evacuate immediately. “Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately,” an NHK anchor emphasized, according to AFP.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) provided a slightly different reading, estimating the quake’s magnitude at 7.4 and placing its epicenter 18 kilometers south of Hualien City, Taiwan, at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.

The full extent of the damage in Taiwan is still unfolding. However, the immediate concern lies with Japan’s southern islands, particularly Miyakojima, where authorities brace for potential tsunami waves.
